Our compostable packaging is designed as an environmentally-friendly alternative to our main range of yellow pouches. Made from bio-based sources, these break down in compost within a year.

Our compostable pouches give our food a 12 month shelf-life, so we pack these meals to order to ensure you receive them with the maximum possible shelf-life. As such, please expect a little additional time for delivery.

How do you prepare a Firepot in compostable packaging?

PAN METHOD: Open pouch and remove oxygen eater sachet. Tip dry food into pan. Add the correct amount of cold water, stir and bring to the boil. Turn off heat, cover and let sit for 10 minutes.

CONTAINER METHOD: Open pouch and remove oxygen eater sachet. Tip dry food into an insulated container. Stir in the correct amount of boiling water. Cover and let sit for 15 minutes.

What is the shelf life on Firepot meals packed in compostable packaging?

We mark the 'best before end' date one year from the date that we pack your food. We pack to order, which means you should receive your meals with at least an 11-month shelf-life. This is shorter than with our standard yellow packaging because our compostable pouches have a lower oxygen barrier.

How do I dispose of a Firepot compostable pouch?

Please do not discard your pouch in the wild. Our compostable pouches are designed to be taken home and either put into home compost - not the same as your food bin - or disposed of in general waste. Councils offering food waste collections tend not to accept compostable packaging as it can take longer than food to biodegrade.

If you do not have access to compost facilities. please throw your compostable pouch into common household waste. This way, if it ends up in landfill, it will still compost down to nothing in time.

Are these pouches waterproof?

Our compostable pouches are not waterproof due to the nature of the materials: both moisture and heat are key components required in the decomposition process, which will begin if either of these conditions are present. We recommend the compostable pouches are carefully protected from moisture using a dry bag or similar.

Are your pouches both compostable and biodegradable?

Yes. Our brown pouches are 100% compostable: from the pouch and zip-lock strip right down to the glue, and ink. They are also biodegradable.

The terms compostable and biodegradable are not always interchangeable. Everything will biodegrade given enough time, even plastic. The trouble is, when plastic degrades, it breaks down into smaller pieces that are ultimately consumed by marine life or absorbed by microorganisms. If something is 100% compostable, it will break down into organic matter, water, and CO2, which actually enriches the soil. We deliberately chose to use durable materials that are compostable, which means the food chain is not polluted at any level.

How quickly will your compostable pouches break down?

Our compostable bags are made from bio-based sources, including sugar cane, which means they should disintegrate in compost within a year — faster if the levels of warmth, moisture and air exposure are right.
